About
About this roll
Every operator and every nation in one roll, so they can be compared side by side.
The Castle Rolls exists because no single source lists every visitable UK castle regardless of who runs it. English Heritage, the National Trust and Historic Environment Scotland each publish their own list of their own properties; nobody publishes the complete one. That matters when you are choosing where to go, because the castle that best suits a given afternoon is often not the one whose operator happens to run the website you landed on.
432 castles are listed. Each entry combines structural facts (operator, condition, access) with ratings and review summaries drawn from publicly available Google reviews, and a short editorial note fact-checked against that review data.
Sources and method
The list of properties is compiled from the official, publicly published property lists of the UK's heritage bodies - English Heritage, the National Trust, the National Trust for Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland and Cadw - alongside the independent estates, councils and castle hotels that open to the public. Ratings and review summaries are drawn from publicly available Google reviews and are always attributed as such; individual visitor quotes are shown as one person's experience, not as operator-verified fact. The editorial notes are written independently and fact-checked against that review data - never copied from an operator's own materials.
Other UK heritage days out
If castles aren't the only thing on your list, Air Museums UK does the same job for the country's aviation heritage sites, and The Stately Homes does it for the UK's great houses - similarly independent, complete directories, each covering a different slice of Britain's history. For days out spent moving rather than looking, Every Running Place lists the UK's running clubs, parkruns and athletics tracks in the same format.
Who builds this
The Castle Rolls is built and maintained by Elevate Growth, a UK agency that does much the same job for YouTube channels - pulling scattered, messy data into one clear picture of what's actually working, and what to do about it.
Found an error?
Castles change hands, close for conservation, and adjust their opening hours more often than any directory can track in real time. If something here is wrong, out of date, or a castle is missing entirely, corrections are always welcome at hello@thecastlerolls.co.uk.
