History
Ivo de Vesci · c. 1096
Erected around 1096 by Ivo de Vesci to guard the River Aln crossing, Alnwick became a Percy family stronghold from the thirteenth century onwards. The Percys transformed it from a military fortress into a grand residential palace-fortress over successive centuries. As the seat of the Dukes of Northumberland, it remains the second-largest inhabited castle in England with over 900 years of history.
