England carries the largest share of the roll by far — 196 castles across 41 counties, from the working state apartments at Windsor to bare Norman earthworks with nothing but a National Trust sign. English Heritage alone manages 92 of them, more than every other operator combined, with the National Trust, the Landmark Trust and a long tail of private estates and local councils making up the rest.
