History
The Bulmers · Norman period
The Bulmers built an initial Norman fortification on this County Durham site, which the Nevilles later rebuilt in the late 14th century. Following the Rising of the North, the Crown confiscated it from the Nevilles in 1569. Matthew Russell extensively reconstructed it in the 1820s to designs by John Paterson; the Dobson family acquired it in 1978 and have undertaken ongoing restoration to maintain the fabric.
