A border fortress with nine centuries of continuous military use behind it - Mary, Queen of Scots was held here after fleeing to England in 1568, and Edward I based himself here during his Scottish campaigns. History
William II · 1092
Built by William II in 1092, Carlisle guarded England's northwestern border for nine centuries. Henry I reinforced it in stone in 1122, and it later imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots, cementing its role as the strategic 'key of the whole kingdom'.
