History
John de Courcy · 1177
John de Courcy established this fortress soon after his 1177 invasion of Ulster, building it on a rocky promontory commanding Belfast Lough. The castle remained militarily important for approximately 750 years, repeatedly besieged and captured by Scottish, Irish, English and French forces. It served as a garrison continuously until 1928.
