History
Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle · 1699
Begun in 1699 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, this Baroque mansion was designed by John Vanbrugh with Nicholas Hawksmoor assisting—Vanbrugh's first architectural commission despite being primarily known as a playwright. Construction proceeded through decades of changes; a catastrophic fire in 1940 destroyed the dome and central hall but later restoration work rebuilt it. The Howard family has occupied the property for over three centuries.
