History
Stewart family of Darnley · 1400
Built around 1400 by the Darts family of Darnley on a hilltop with 12th-century defensive earthworks, the structure features an unusual central tower with four square corner towers. Besieged and heavily repaired in 1544, it became a hunting lodge for the Lennox family. Partially restored in 1847 for Queen Victoria's visit, it became the National Trust for Scotland's first property in 1931.
