History
Roger Bigod · 1189-1213
An early Norman fortification occupied this Suffolk site by 1148 but Henry II destroyed it. Roger Bigod then constructed an innovative replacement featuring thirteen defensive towers around a curtain wall instead of a traditional keep. This distinctive design proved resilient and the castle remained strategically important for centuries.
