One of the earliest brick-built castles in England, constructed in the 15th century by builders brought over from Flanders. It's now home to Bader College (part of Queen's University, Canada), with gardens open daily but the interior only accessible on a guided tour.
The brickwork itself — a genuinely early and unusual choice of material for a 15th-century English castle, best appreciated with the guided tour's context.
If you want to see inside, book the guided tour rather than just turning up for the gardens; it's also a popular wedding venue, so check nothing's booked in on the day you plan to visit.
Recent reviews on file are all strongly positive, with repeated praise for the guided tours, knowledgeable guides, and the castle's grounds and gardens — including glowing feedback from a wedding supplier and a garden-show visitor. No notable criticisms appear in this review set.
Gardens daily; interior by guided tour
“Lovely visit. Our tour guide Melinda was very good. What she did not know about the history of the castle is not worth knowing. Beautiful castle & grounds.”— Angie, visitor review
