A small keep with a grim Civil War history - the Parliamentarian garrison here was massacred by Royalist besiegers in 1644 after surrendering, and the ruin has since been carefully conserved by a dedicated preservation trust. It's free to enter, with a donation box on site funding the ongoing work.

Worth the trip

How vividly the small scale of the place lets you picture the siege - reviewers say it's easy to imagine what happened here centuries ago in a way larger, grander ruins don't manage.

Before you go

The on-site car park holds only 3-4 cars, so arrive with a backup plan if it's full; there are picnic tables if you want to make a stop of it, and the donation box funds the trust's conservation work, so it's worth dropping something in even though entry is free.

Reviewers consistently enjoy this small, locally preserved ruin as a peaceful spot for a quick visit or picnic, several noting its role in the English Civil War and that it's maintained through donations to a local preservation trust. Free parking and entry are mentioned favourably throughout, with no notable complaints.

Conserved Civil War siege ruin, free

“A little gem worth going to see if you are staying in the area. Great spot for a picnic in the summer, there is a small gravel car park right by the ruins.”— Alice, visitor review
