History
Sir John de Courcy · 1180
Norman knight Sir John de Courcy built the original fortifications around 1180 as part of his network of defences across Strangford Lough. After O'Neill's lands were divided, Scottish aristocrat James Hamilton received the area and moved to Killyleagh around 1625, building the courtyard walls. The Hamilton family has owned it ever since, transforming it into their ancestral seat.
