History
Norman baron · c. 1100
A Norman fortress built around 1100 on a cliff above the River Nidd, this castle was strengthened by Henry I in 1130 and later became a royal stronghold. Edward I invested heavily in its reconstruction between 1307 and 1312, including the great keep. The site witnessed significant medieval events before parliamentary forces dismantled it in 1648 during the Civil War.
