History
William FitzOsbern · 1066-1069
Established 1066-1069 by Norman lord William FitzOsbern as a strategic border stronghold on the Monnow and Wye convergence. Birthplace of King Henry V in 1386, it grew as a royal residence until Cromwell ordered its slighting in 1647, leaving fragments of the keep and hall.
