History
Toret family
A stone castle begun around 1200 with a fine gatehouse replaced earlier timber fortifications built by the Toret family. In the sixteenth century, Sir Andrew Corbet added an ambitious Elizabethan wing with Italian-inspired design. Civil War fighting severely damaged both the medieval and Renaissance sections. The site now presents the striking contrast of medieval fortress and unfinished Renaissance mansion.
