Getting in - what National Trust says
There is a step-free route to the moat and Inner Bailey via the Bellingham Lane entrance next to The Mill Arts and Events Centre, with two orientation maps around the moat; the path in is steep. Access to the top of the Motte is only by a steep stepped approach over uneven steps. Slopes are steep in places and routes are uneven and slippery. There are no toilets on the Mount itself - public toilet

History
Swein (son of Robert FitzWimarc) · 1066-1086
A Norman motte-and-bailey constructed in the decades following 1066 by Swein, son of Robert FitzWimarc, a favoured Norman lord granted extensive Essex holdings. The castle served as an administrative hub for Swein's estates until his descendants' fortunes declined, and by the 14th century it was no longer used militarily, becoming open pasture.
