William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, built this mid-14th century fortress as the last great medieval curtain wall castle in Scotland, a single massive wall blocking a coastal headland. It remained the Douglas seat for centuries, enduring royal sieges and finally falling to Oliver Cromwell's army in 1651.
