History
Richard de Redvers · 1106
Granted to Richard de Redvers by King Henry I in 1106, the castle became the principal seat of the Courtenay Earls of Devon. During the Civil War it was besieged by Fairfax's Parliamentarian forces and largely dismantled to prevent its military re-use.
