History
Hamelin de Balun · c. 1087
Established by Norman lord Hamelin de Balun around 1087, this castle was the site of a notorious massacre on Christmas 1175 when William de Braose murdered Welsh nobles, triggering retaliatory raids. The keep and structures visible today were rebuilt in stone between 1233–1295, with further towers added by 1314. During the Civil War, the castle was destroyed by order of Charles I to prevent its use by Parliament.
