History
Edward I · 1277-1289
Edward I of England built the current castle from 1277, completing it in 1289 at considerable expense. The Welsh captured it in 1404 under Owain Glyndŵr and the English recaptured it four years later. From 1637 it housed a royal mint for Charles I until the Civil War disrupted operations; Oliver Cromwell slighted it in 1649.
