History
Begun in the late 13th century as a fortified manor house for Hugh de Raymes, it progressively became more defensive as Anglo-Scottish border violence intensified. Attacked multiple times by Scottish raiders, the castle exemplifies a residential structure transformed by military necessity into a compact stronghold. It remains one of England's least-altered medieval manor fortifications.
