A fortified medieval manor house built for Hugh de Reymes from around 1293, tucked into the Northumberland countryside near Hadrian's Wall country. Restored floors mean you can actually walk through room after room as they were laid out, rather than picking a route across bare foundations.
The restored interior floors - reviewers who've seen plenty of English Heritage ruins say Aydon is unusually complete for its size.
Parking is £3 unless you're an English Heritage member, and it's a short walk from the car park to the entrance; budget 30-40 minutes, which is roughly what most visitors report spending inside.
Reviewers consistently describe Aydon Castle as an unexpectedly rewarding, well-restored site, with several noting the intact floors and room layouts give a rare sense of what castle life actually looked like. Friendly, informative staff and reasonable pricing come up repeatedly, and most visits are fairly short, around 30-40 minutes. There's no significant recurring criticism across these reviews.
Fortified medieval manor house
“A little castle in the beautiful countryside. Small entrance / gift shop with a very informative and helpful staff member. There are plenty of information boards inside and layouts of the rooms. We spent 30-40 minutes…”— Steven Moseley, visitor review
