History
Ida of Bernicia (Anglo-Saxon); Normans built stone castle; Henry II completed keep · 547 (Anglo-Saxon capture); Norman period (stone castle); by 1164 (keep)
Built on the site of a former Celtic fortress and possible capital of Bernicia, Bamburgh was taken by Anglo-Saxon ruler Ida of Bernicia in 547. The Normans built a stone castle, which Henry II likely completed its keep by 1164. The castle passed to the Crown and eventually deteriorated before Victorian industrialist William Armstrong bought and restored it in the 1890s.
