History
Guy de Balliol
Guy de Balliol constructed the original stone fortress around 1095-1125, which his nephew Bernard de Balliol and son Bernard II extended by 1185. The castle featured a distinctive cylindrical keep, likely built in the 1120s. Richard III inherited it through his wife Anne Neville and favoured it as a residence, leaving his white boar emblem carved above a window. It fell into decline after the Balliol family lost control following their failed Scottish throne claim. English Heritage now maintains the ruins of this strategically positioned stronghold above the Tees gorge.
