A single massive fragment of a Norman keep built by Henry II to guard the road over Stainmore, now standing alone in a Teesdale village with the rest of the castle long gone. It's free and unstaffed, and reviewers rate the walk that takes in nearby Mill Force waterfall as much as the ruin itself.
The sheer bulk of the surviving keep wall - a single heavy fragment that still conveys the scale of what was one of the largest Norman keeps in the north.
Parking is limited in the village, so be mindful of residents' driveways and access points; there are no toilets, shops or information boards on site, so come prepared.
Reviewers appreciate that Bowes Castle is free, peaceful, and set in an attractive village with a nearby waterfall walk, but a recurring complaint is the lack of on-site information boards or a plaque explaining its history, with a couple of visitors having to look the castle up online instead. Parking in the surrounding village is also noted as limited.
Massive Norman keep ruin
“Lovely castle in well-kept grounds and a beautiful village. My one gripe is that it would be nice to see a plaque or information board. We had to go onto Wikipedia to find out about it.”— Duncan Wilson, visitor review
