A Norman castle rebuilt and re-fronted across five centuries - Elizabethan windows punched into medieval walls, with evidence of even earlier activity on the site - paired with a working tidal mill on the millpond below, one of the last of its kind in Britain. History
Gerald de Windsor · c.1100
Built by Gerald de Windsor around 1100 on a limestone bluff with strategic ancient roots, Carew Castle was developed across centuries. Gerald's descendants took the surname de Carew and expanded it as an enclosure castle by 1270. Rhys ap Thomas rebuilt it with luxury Tudor apartments in the late 15th century, but his grandson Rhys ap Gruffudd was executed for treason in 1531.
