History
Hugh d'Avranches, 2nd Earl of Chester · 1070
Founded in 1070 by Hugh d'Avranches, the castle was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century with the Agricola Tower serving as the main gateway, which still houses a chapel with Norman frescoes. During the Civil War it was assaulted by Parliamentary forces and later used as a prison and military depot.
