A full-scale Victorian castle - not a folly grafted onto an older ruin, but built whole in the 1840s to look genuinely medieval - now run as a hotel and wedding venue. Reviewers are largely won over by the theatre of staying inside a real castle, though a few report the premium pricing doesn't always match the service on the day.
At a glance
Worth the trip
Staying overnight inside an actual castle - reviewers say the small windows and maze-like corridors are part of the charm, not a flaw.
Before you go
It's hotel-guests and event-bookings only, so day visits aren't possible; a minority of reviewers flag inconsistent service at the price point, so it's worth checking recent reviews before booking.
What visitors say
Peckforton Castle reviews · 4.4 / 5 across 2,584 Google reviews
Most reviewers describe Peckforton Castle as a striking wedding and dining venue with excellent, attentive staff and food, particularly the tasting menu at 1851.
However, one reviewer reports a seriously disrupted stay after being placed in a room directly above a loud wedding function with little resolution offered, and another notes minor service lapses like slow drink refills during a wedding, so room placement and staffing at busy events are worth bearing in mind.
“I stayed at Peckforton Castle for one night and it was truly magical. It is a very beautiful and atmospheric venue. Honestly, the perfect place for a wedding or a special getaway.”- Nicha, visitor review

History
John Tollemache · 1844-1850
Built between 1844 and 1850 for John Tollemache, a wealthy Cheshire landowner, by architect Anthony Salvin in Gothic Revival style. The castle cost £60,000 and features a gatehouse, portcullis, dry moat, and arrow-slot windows. After the Second World War it was converted to a hotel in 1988 and purchased by the Naylor family in 2006 for use as a wedding and events venue.
