History
William de Warenne, Earl of Surrey · 11th century
Built in the 11th century by William de Warenne after the Norman Conquest. Hamelin Plantagenet rebuilt it in stone around 1180-1190, creating its distinctive cylindrical keep with six buttresses, one of England's finest examples of late Norman architecture.
