History
Ilbert de Lacy · c. 1086
Ilbert de Lacy raised this fortress around 1086 following the Norman Conquest. The castle grew into a major royal stronghold and changed hands repeatedly through English history. Richard II was imprisoned here before his death in February 1400, making it a site of momentous royal tragedy.
