A former bishop's palace dating to the 15th century, now trading as a hotel with a well-regarded whisky bar and open fire. Reviewers are warm about the welcome and the bar but more mixed on the food and rooms - a reminder that a 600-year-old building comes with 600-year-old room proportions.

At a glance

Worth the trip

The whisky bar - consistently the part of the stay reviewers linger over, with a genuinely wide selection and a fire to sit by.

Before you go

Don't expect modern hotel room sizes given the building's age; go for the bar and the setting rather than expecting luxury-hotel polish in the food or rooms.

What visitors say

Dornoch Castle Hotel reviews · 4.3 / 5 across 241 Google reviews

Most reviewers rate Dornoch Castle Hotel highly, consistently praising the warm, friendly service, the cosy bar with its fireplace, and the food, from Christmas meal packages to breakfast.

One reviewer stood out with a much lower score, finding their room dated and poorly heated for the price paid and feeling the hotel overall felt tired - a view not echoed by the other reviews, but worth noting for anyone comparing value against a historic-castle premium.

“4 of us up for a golfing weekend in 2 twin rooms. From the moment we arrived the service from the staff was superb. The rooms were spotless and perfect for what we needed. The food and service in the restaurant was…”- John Sime, visitor review

History

Bishops of Caithness · c.1500

Originally called the Palace of Dornoch, the castle was built around 1500 as a residence for the bishops of Caithness. It was damaged in a feud between the McKays and Murrays in 1570, then rebuilt with an extended tower. The castle was restored between 1813 and 1814, and after various uses including a sheriff court, it was converted into a hotel in 1947.
