History
William Calder · 1454
A licence to fortify was granted to William Calder in 1454, though architectural analysis dates the oldest stonework to around 1380. The castle was famously built around a living holly tree, whose remains still survive in the tower's basement. The Campbell family acquired it through marriage in 1510 and expanded it significantly over the following centuries.
