History
William the Conqueror · post-1066; Henry II's keep 1179-1188
Built on a site with Roman lighthouse remains, Dover Castle was established by William the Conqueror after 1066. Henry II expanded it significantly from 1179, spending over £6,500 on defensive works. The castle survived French sieges during the Barons' Wars and remained crucial for English coastal defence through the Napoleonic era and World Wars.
