One of Henry VIII's Device Forts, built in 1539-40 as part of the coastal defence programme that also produced Walmer Castle nearby, and one of the best-preserved examples of the type. Its low, rounded bastions were built for artillery rather than looks, and the lower levels in particular give a clear sense of how the fort was designed to withstand cannon fire.

A full circuit takes about an hour; there's a paid car park nearby at £1.80 an hour (English Heritage members can use their free pass), and it pairs well with a stop at Walmer Castle a short distance down the coast.
