History
Malcolm III · 11th century
A royal stronghold since Malcolm III's reign in the 11th century, Edinburgh Castle evolved through centuries of reconstruction and reinforcement. St Margaret's Chapel, built around 1130, is its oldest surviving structure. The castle endured 26 sieges, more than any other stronghold in Britain, and remains Scotland's most visited historic site.
