A rare surviving example of a Norman enclosure castle - a walled bailey without a central keep - dating to the late 11th century, with large stretches of the outer curtain wall still standing to an impressive height. It's free, unstaffed, and small enough to see properly in well under an hour, tucked just off the main street in Eynsford village.

Worth the trip

The curtain wall itself - one of the earliest and most complete examples of this walled-enclosure design left in England.

Before you go

The River Darent runs along the castle's west boundary, so keep an eye on small children; there's free parking right by the site, making it an easy stop rather than a planned excursion.

WHAT VISITORS SAY · 4.3 / 5 across 633 Google reviews

Reviewers enjoy Eynsford as a free, quiet ruin worth a short stop, particularly for its rare surviving Norman enclosure walls and its picturesque village setting near a ford. One reviewer felt metal fencing around parts of the site slightly detracted from its appearance, but this wasn't a widely shared concern.

“Beautiful site stunning surroundings. Unfortunately, whilst looking at the lake my partner got a barbed fish hook stuck in his ankle by some irresponsible fishing we had to leave to go to the A&E , we did return after…”— Stacy, visitor review
