History

Founded by Richard Fitz Gilbert following the Norman Conquest to guard a vital River Medway crossing, Tonbridge began as a wooden motte-and-bailey. It was rebuilt in stone before 1100, and its famous twin-towered gatehouse was completed in 1260.
