Hylton Castle is the surviving gatehouse of a much larger medieval structure, restored by English Heritage in partnership with the Hylton Castle Trust and opened only by pre-booked tour. History
Sir William Hylton · late 14th century
Sir William Hylton commissioned this distinctive gatehouse-tower shortly before 1400 as a fortified residence for his family. The four-storey structure was lavishly decorated with heraldic devices including the white hart badge of Richard II. The gatehouse remained the Hylton family seat until the line ended in 1746.
