History
Northumbrian kings · mid-7th century
A Benedictine monastery was probably founded in the mid-7th century by Northumbrian kings, becoming a significant burial site for three Scottish and English monarchs before being destroyed by Vikings in 875. It was refounded in 1083 by monks from Jarrow and rebuilt into a magnificent church. A fortified gatehouse was added later as the priory enjoyed extensive lands and trade privileges until the Dissolution.
