History
Malcolm III · 1057
A succession of castles occupied the site from 1057, beginning with Malcolm III. Robert the Bruce razed the medieval fortress in 1307. The present red sandstone structure was completed in 1836 by architect William Burn and operates as a museum following 2022 reopening.
