History

Roman military fort (Leucarum) occupied the site from around 75 AD. Norman invaders established an earthwork castle around 1106 on the same strategic location; this initial fortification was destroyed by Welsh forces in 1151. Normans subsequently rebuilt it in stone during the 13th century, replacing the earlier earthwork defences.
