Marisco Castle, Bideford - Lundy Island, Bideford EX39 2LY

A ruin on Lundy, the National Trust-owned island in the Bristol Channel — the keep's cottages are let out separately by the Landmark Trust, so this is as much an expedition as a visit. Getting there is the story: a boat or helicopter crossing before you even reach the castle.

Worth the trip

The setting — a castle ruin on a remote Atlantic island, reachable only by the seasonal Lundy ferry or a winter helicopter.

Before you go

Check the Lundy ferry's seasonal sailing schedule well ahead of any trip, since this isn't a castle you can visit on a whim. With no visitor reviews on file yet, go in with modest expectations about what's actually still standing.

On NT-owned Lundy; Landmark Trust manages, keep cottages via Landmark
