Not a medieval fortress at all but a Victorian-era castle turned family theme park, with rides, gnome grottoes and museum-style exhibits packed inside and out. It's a genuinely odd hybrid - part historic building, part fairground - and reviewers say it lands best with younger children.
At a glance
Worth the trip
The mix of old-fashioned dark rides and animatronic exhibits inside a real castle building - reviewers describe it as unlike anywhere else.
Before you go
It suits younger children best - reviewers with kids over about 12 or 13 found it started to run thin. Parking is free and plentiful, and there's space for picnics if you want to make a full day of it.
What visitors say
Watermouth Castle reviews · 4.5 / 5 across 2,301 Google reviews
Recent reviewers all had a thoroughly positive family day out, repeatedly highlighting the interactive gnome and model displays, marble runs, and old-fashioned arcade games as the standout draws for children, alongside friendly, welcoming staff.
Free parking and pretty gardens/views also get a mention.
The only note of criticism, from a single reviewer, was that the fountain show could use a spoken announcement to keep kids from running around during it - otherwise reviews are uniformly enthusiastic.
“Watermouth Castle is a very curious place to explore. There are lots of interactives for children to enjoy, along with museum-like aspects to them that also seem quite fun. It's just so different and out there!”- Jupiter Hadley, visitor review
Getting in - what Escapade Group Ltd says
A historic building over 200 years old; the gardens and rides are set in a steep valley with slopes, steps and uneven surfaces. Some pathways are tarmac, others cobbled or uneven. Manual wheelchair users are advised to visit with a fit and able companion for support with gradients. Essential Companion tickets via Access Card from 27 July 2026.

History
Joseph Davie Bassett · mid-19th century
Designed by George Wightwick in the mid-19th century as a country residence for the Bassett family, this Victorian-era building resembles a castle despite its non-military origins. The property evolved through several private owners before becoming a family amusement park with rides, exhibits, and Victorian antique collections.
