Getting in - what Landmark Trust says
Access to the property is via a driveway, with three parking spaces for guests just inside the gates. The stone spiral staircase from the entrance leads up to the first-floor living area, and the bedrooms are on the two floors above; the site states the stairs are steep, narrow and spiral, with stairs between the bedrooms on both floors. History
William de Merlay · c. 1095
The barony was granted to William de Merlay in 1080 and a motte-and-bailey castle was built by 1095. A second stone castle was built in the 13th century. Only the inner gatehouse survives, now restored by the Landmark Trust and used as a holiday let.
