The cafe, gift shop and friendly, knowledgeable staff come in for regular mention, and many note it is dog-friendly.
Several add that the exposed clifftop position can be windy, so a coat is worth packing.

History
Henry VIII · 1540-1542
Henry VIII ordered this artillery fort built between 1540 and 1542 as part of his coastal defence programme against French and imperial threats. It guarded the Carrick Roads anchorage, paired with St Mawes Castle across the water. Held by Royalists during the English Civil War, it was besieged and captured by Parliament in 1646. Later upgrades in the 1730s and 1790s, plus Napoleonic-era reinforcements, modernised its defences. The castle was decommissioned in 1956 and passed to English Heritage.
