Reviewers consistently rate the coastal setting - a small cove with sweeping Firth of Clyde views - as highly as the castle itself, and praise the knowledgeable volunteers who run it.
The most repeated caveat by far is limited opening: several visitors arrived outside the weekend/summer opening hours and could only walk around the exterior.
Entry is free with donations welcomed, and the walk from the car park is generally described as easy and dog-friendly.

History
Robert Boyd · mid-14th century
The site was fortified from the 11th century, but the present tower house dates to the mid-14th century, built by Robert Boyd (grandson of Sir Robert Boyd, who received the estate from Robert the Bruce in 1315). The Boyds retained ownership until 1737, adding upper storeys and extending the spiral staircase in the late 1400s. A severe storm unroofed the castle in 1739, leaving it as a ruin for over 250 years. Local volunteers restored it from 2004 onward following its BBC Restoration feature.
