History
Alan fitz Walter or Walter Stewart · 1230s
Built by the Stewart family's founding ancestor in the early 13th century with an unusual circular curtain wall, it was twice attacked by Norwegian forces before 1263 and fell under Scottish royal favour. Four round towers were added in the late 13th century; a new gatehouse began around 1500 for James IV. It survived the Civil War under Cromwell's control but was partly dismantled after 1660.
