History
Sir John Maitland
The ground beneath Thirlestane has been fortified since at least the 12th century, but Sir John Maitland built the present tower house in 1587 on the remains of an earlier fort. The Maitland family transformed it into a grand residence over four centuries, with major remodelling by the Duke of Lauderdale in the 1670s and Victorian extensions in the 1840s.
