Built by Richard Fitz Gilbert shortly after the Norman Conquest and later home to Elizabeth de Clare, one of the richest women in medieval England, this motte-and-bailey castle now sits inside a 36-acre country park where the old railway station has become a cafe. The Great Eastern Railway cut straight through the inner bailey in 1867, so what survives today is the motte and part of the shell keep.

History
Richard Fitz Gilbert · c. 1090
Built by Richard Fitz Gilbert after the Norman Conquest and first recorded by 1090, the castle had an unusual two-bailey layout between the River Stour and Chilton Stream. A polygonal shell keep was added in stone in the 13th century, and Elizabeth de Clare kept a lavish household here in the 14th century. The castle later fell into disrepair and its stone was stripped for local building; the Great Eastern Railway cut through the inner bailey in 1867. The site became Clare Castle Country Park in 1972.
