History
Robert Gernon · 1066
Robert Gernon established this motte-and-bailey fortress in 1066 following the Norman Conquest, making it the head of his barony. After centuries of habitation and eventual decay, it was carefully reconstructed in the 1980s on its original earthworks. Today it stands as the world's only complete wooden motte-and-bailey reconstruction on its authentic site.
