Aubrey de Vere, 1st Earl of Oxford · 1140
Aubrey de Vere, 1st Earl of Oxford, built this stone keep around 1140, creating one of the finest Norman towers surviving in England. The castle witnessed medieval power struggles and hosted royal guests including Elizabeth I. The Lindsay family, descendants of the de Veres, acquired it in the 1980s and still reside there.
